A- hygiene is of utmost importance while wearing contact lenses. Lenses should never be worn beyond their expiry date. E.g. daily disposable lenses should be discarded at the end of the day, monthly disposable lenses should be discarded at the end of the month. Yearly lenses should be regularly sterilised as per protocol.
Always wash hands with soap and water before wearing or taking out contact lenses, and make sure the lenses are replaced in their case.
Sleeping with lenses makes the lenses very dry, and they may damage your Cornea/ cause infection/ inflammation. This can be sight-threatening as Corneal involvement is a serious condition and needs prompt and rigorous treatment.
You should never bathe/ swim with lenses on. This increases the risk of infection.
Should never rub your eyes if you have lenses on. If something goes inside the eye while the lenses are on, you should always remove the lens and then wash your eyes with clean water. Rubbing will cause the foreign particle which is trapped between the Cornea and the lens to rub against the Cornea and cause serious damage to it.
Lenses should be worn for not more than 6 hours a day, depending on the type of contact lens you have.
If you have dry eyes, it is better to avoid wearing contact lenses. If you have to, then please visit your eye surgeon who will prescribe some tear supplement eye drops which can be applied over the contact lenses.
