Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non- invasive method for assessing the microscopic structure of the retina and optic nerve by use of infra-red light. The test is completely safe, with no side effects, and can usually be done without using dilating drops.
It is commonly used by Retina specialists to assess the back part of the eye and helps in the diagnosis and detailed evaluation of many retina diseases like diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, macular edema, central serous retinopathy, uveitis, epiretinal membrane, etc. It helps in accurately diagnosing the disease, planning treatment and following up, to see the effectiveness of the treatment.
It is also used for assessment of the optic nerve for diseases like Glaucoma, Optic Nerve head drusen, and papilledema.
